The crusaders were trying to promote Christianity. They did this not by converting, but mainly by fighting others (infidels). During the crusades many people were killed. The crusaders were hypocrites because they believed that is is acceptable to kill in the name of a religion that explicitly says "Thou shallt not kill".

It's much more of a safeguard then a limit but there are limits. It says everyone has the right to free speech and that everyone is created equal. it also restricts people from violating others from free speech. 

almost all the amendments tries to keep the government from restricting the people and protecting the people and the people have the right to abolish the government when it tries to take your rights of self preservation (2nd amendment) or 1st amendment of freedom of speech and religion.
