It gave control of the Mississippi River to the Union.

Further Explanation:

The capture of Vicksburg proved to be a major victory for the Union during the period of civil war and to gain its capture, the Union army surrounded the city of Vicksburg and it last took control over it. This battle took over a month and it was led by the commander of Union forces named General Ulysses S. Grant who had an army of over 35000 men under his command whereas the leader of confederates who commanded the army of Mississippi had only 18000 men under his command.

It all started to post the spring of 1862 when the confederates lost Fort Henry as well as Fort Donelson in Tennessee and New Orleans and Vicksburg became the key remaining point of their defense at the Mississippi River. Capture of Vicksburg was strategically important because it was located on the Mississippi River and that was the last major city which was held by the South and it was well known by everyone that if the North takes control over the Vicksburg then confederates will be denied of supply lines from the west and it will be isolated from the South too.

When Vicksburg fell to Union troops on July 4, 1863, the Confederacy lost its last chance to control the Mississippi River. Control of the Mississippi River during the American Civil War was an economic and psychological factor for both the North and the South.
