It was important for the Harlem Renaissance to establish a cultural identity for African-Americans at that time because after the Civil War, the blacks were freemen and began to strive for political equality and adequate representation. They were largely successful, as some blacks served in Congress and denounced The Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 which also led to the Civil Rights Act in 1875. However, between 1890 and 108, the Democratic whites came into power in the South and passed Jim Crow laws which enforced segregation in the South.
