Wu Zetian was born into a wealthy family and through good education, became interested in politics. She worked her way up to becoming Empress by defying rules and eventually became the Emperor’s main wife. Wu ruled through her husband until he died and she became the regent for her son. Maintaining power was difficult, even though she was a great Emperor, Wu Zetian had to use spies to determine who was loyal, and executed those who weren’t.
