In the south slaves picked cotton and did other jobs that needed to be done that white men didn’t desire to do... in the north the industrial revolution was in full speed. The south because rich of of the cotton industry became of slaves.

The enslavement of African people was the foundation of the economy and social structure of the Southern colonies of America throughout the early seventeenth century and late nineteenth century. The economy of the colonies was based on agriculture and the production of profitable exports such as cotton, tobacco, indigo, and sugar cane. Slaves were brought from Africa as a source of free labor and worked on farms and plantations to raise these crops.
