Pavlova-9 [17]

Answer:

<u>"when its timbers were saturated with dew"</u>

<u>Explanation:</u>

Note that a vivid sensory detail in literature may refer to words or sentences that triggers the readers to use their senses such as:

  • their sense of sight
  • their sense of taste and
  • their sense of touch.

Thus, by saying <em>"its timbers were saturated with dew" </em><u>the narrator employs his reader into using their senses to imagine the uncommon sight of dew on timber.</u>

How does de Maupassant use comedy to reveal his theme about weakness in human nature?
laiz [17]

Answer:

Guy de Maupassant used comedy in his short story through the narrator's anticipation of his friends' supposedly<u> playing tricks on him.</u> He made use of the <em>narrator's cautiousness</em> such as <em>"inspecting every article"</em> in the house that seemed suspicious to him. This is<em> comical in nature</em> because he wasn't really sure whether there was, indeed, a prank (practical joke) or he was just imagining it. Such kind of feeling is a "weakness" when it comes to<u> human's nature.</u>

Explanation:

The question above is related to the short story entitled "An Uncomfortable Bed," written by<em> Guy de Maupassant</em><em> (a famous French writer)</em>.

It centers on the character of a wealthy man who was very suspicious about his friends, especially whenever he would spend time with them.

There are numerous references to “the time before”, how much time has passed and how old is our narrator? Give examples of thing
allsm [11]

The narrator is 33 years old and about 8 years have passed between the beginning of Gilead and the time the narrator is living.

We can reach this answer because:

  • "The Handmaid's Tale" is a book written by Margaret Atwood.
  • The narrator of this book is the protagonist of the story.
  • The reader does not have much information about her, but know that she is a 33-year-old fertile woman.
  • She lived in the US and at age 25 she witnessed the US government being taken over by a radical, ultra-religious group that took over the country and turned it into a place called Gilead.
  • There she became a handmaid and was responsible for bearing children for wealthy families who could not bear children.
  • This required her to go through very violent processes, lose all her freedom, and be removed from her family.

As we can see, the protagonist and narrator is telling the story of when she was 33 years old, but she shows the moments when Gilead began to be established when she was around 25 years old.

With that, we can say that about eight years have passed.
