For the first question:

-8.3 - (-5.4)

This is -8.3 minus negative 5.4

The two negatives equal a positive, so he <em>should have </em>replaced them with a + sign:

-8.3 + 5.4

Instead, he subtracted 5.4 from -8.3 and got A.

For the second question, find a common denominator so that you can add the fractions together. 8 and 3 both fit into 24, so use that as your denominator. To get from the denominator 8 to the denominator 24, you multiply by 3. So multiply the numerator (7) by 3 as well. So that fraction becomes 21/24

To get from denominator 3 to 24, you multiply by 8. So do the same thing to the top. You then have 16/24. The change in the amount of water is 16/24 cups. That can be simplified to 2/3

Why is the answer D? Please explain. Thanks!
andre [41]
We need the metric relations (see image for definition of A & B)
which says
AO^2=OB*OP
or
AB^2=OB*BP

We will use the second one, and substitute values
AB=3
OB=4
AB^2=OB*BP => 3^2=4*BP => BP=3^2/4=2.25
=>
P(4+2.25,0)=(6.25,0)

Using the first relation:
AO=sqrt(4^2+3^2) = 5
OB=4
AO^2=OB*OP => 5^2=4*OP => OP=5^2/4=6.25
=>
x-coordinate of P=6.25

\frac{4x^2+8x}{x^2-x-6}\\\\Domain:x^2-x-6\neq0\\\\x^2-3x+2x-3\cdot2=x(x-3)+2(x-3)=(x-3)(x+2)\\\\x^2-x-6\neq0\iff(x-3)(x+2)\neq0\iff x-3\neq0\ or\ x+2\neq0\\\\therefore\ x\neq3\ and\ x\neq-2\\------------------\\the\ nominator:\ 4x^2+8x=4x\cdot x+4x\cdot2=4x(x+2)\\the\ denominator:x^2-x-6=(x-3)(x+2)

therefore\ simplify\ form:\\\\\frac{4x^2+8x}{x^2-x-6}=\frac{4x(x+2)}{(x-3)(x+2)}=\boxed{\frac{4x}{x-3}}
