Examples of symbols in the story include roads, which are metaphors for life paths and choices and the symbols provided by the descriptions of nature in the poem which are metaphors for the times in people's lives (specifically when they are making large life choices).
These figurative nature of the roads and the descriptions of the natural world in the setting allow the reader of the poem to infer that the poem is not "actually" about roads in the woods, but about the ways that our choice of life path can affect things.
Figures of speech in the poem When giving is all we have:
- ‘When Giving is all we have’ is a beautiful poem written by Alberto Rios where he states that giving makes us a better human being and we should always be grateful for all that we have.
- Throughout the poem the poet have made use of some figures of speech, Anaphora is one of those.
- Anaphora is type of figure of speech where same words are repeated at the beginning of a sentence.
- In the poem, the initial lines begins with the common repeated phrase, ‘We give because’, thus making it an Anaphora.
- Apart from this, the line ‘Giving has many faces’ is an example of Personification where giving is given a human quality of having many faces.
- By this he meant that giving can be in any form- be it a kind act, be it in the form of money, or simply in the form of words of appreciation.
