Two morphologically identical Drosophila populations live in Lower Nahal Oren, Mount Carmel, Israel. There are two slopes of a v

alley that face each other and drosophila live on both slopes (they share a common ancestor). The environment is very different even though they are very close. In the center of the valley is an area in which flies from each side have an opportunity to mate. (an aside: This is frowned upon by fly society buy these tiny Montagues and Capulets persist). Evaluate each scenario:

Answer:

There are two possible scenarios

Scenario 1) Genetic flow is acting on these populations

Scenario 2) The original population has recently diverged

Explanation:

Scenario 1:

These two populations of flies should probably express some phenotypic difference due to the environmental condition on each slope. Remember that the phenotype is the product of interaction between the genotype and the environment. However, <em>the difference between populations would exist if they were isolated and separated by an ecological or biological barrier.</em> The <em>barrier would impede genetic flow, and each population would have its particular genetic charge and phenotype</em>.

In the exposed situation, we know that each population inhabits a slope. And that the slopes differ in the environmental conditions. But in the center of the valley, these two populations get to meet and mate. The valley is acting as a corridor between both groups and allows the <u>genetic flow</u> to occur.

Let us remember that gene flow is an evolutive strength only if

  • there exists migration from one population to the other, and
  • the allelic frequency in one generation is different from the allelic frequency in the next generation.

Genetic flow acts<u> homogenizing the allelic frequencies between the two populations</u>, and it might introduce variability into the new one. For genetic flow to be possible, there needs not only the <em>movement of the genes from one population to the other but also the reproduction process on the new population</em>. Hence, it <em>involves an interaction between the dispersion pattern and the reproductive system</em>.

Individuals from both groups get to mate in the valley, leaving fertile offspring. The offspring, carrying genes from both populations, are included in one or the other group, where they will reproduce. In each population, the frequency of genes of the other group increase with time as the flies keep mating. Eventually, genetic flow homogenizes the variability between both populations, making them look similar.

Scenario Two:

It might be an early dispersion event in which the common ancestor of both populations used to inhabit the center of the valley. With time, and as the original population got bigger, dispersion took a significant role. Flies began moving into both slopes. Even though each area has different environmental conditions, there has not been enough time for these animals to adapt morphologically to each side, so they still look identical. Also, as it is an early event, these two new groups are not separated yet, so they have not developed biological barriers between them, and individuals can still mate in the center of the valley.

How many different codons can code for the amino acid tryptophan (Trp)?
Minchanka [31]
The chart very nicely lays out the amino acid each codon corresponds to. You're looking for "trp" in the chart, which only appears once, beside the UGG codon. Therefore, only one codon codes for tryptophan.

A biologist in Pennsylvania observes the interactions of populations of maple trees, mosses, eastern spotted skunks, peregrine fa
Alecsey [184]

Answer:

The biologist is studying about the ecological community.

Explanation:

The ecological community refers to the community in which population of different types of species survives together. As the biologist is observing about the interaction of different populations of Pennsylvania region, it can be inferred that the he is studying about the ecological community of Pennsylvania region.

The population surving in the community interact with each other through different modes of interaction. It may either parasitic, or mutual, or competitive or predication or commercialism.

Which of the following represents a type II survivorship curve?
Step2247 [10]

Answer:

The correct answer will be option-C.

Explanation:

The survivorship curves are the representation of the proportion of individuals of the given species which are alive at different ages in the population of species.  The curves are represented in the form of a graph with the number of individuals plotted on the y-axis to the age of survivorship on the x-axis.

The survivorship curves are of three types: Type I, II and III out of which type three represents the population with equal probability of dying at all age groups. This is represented by a straight line on the graph.

Thus, Option-c is the correct answer.

Which of the following best explains the relationship between temperature and this enzyme?
DochEvi [55]
<h3>Answer:</h3>

Enzymes functions in a specific temperature range.

<h3>Explanation:</h3>
  • Enzymes are biochemical catalysts whose function is to speed up the rate at which chemical reactions occur.
  • Enzymes work best at a specific range of temperatures known as optimum temperature.
  • Low temperatures below optimum levels deactivate the enzyme and thus lowering the rate of enzyme activity.
  • Extreme temperatures, on the other hand, denatures the enzyme altering enzyme's active sites making it difficult for substrates to fit.

What’s the taxonomy chart for plants?
Dima020 [189]

Answer:

Taxonomy chart for plants (mango) is given below :

1) The domain is eukaryote.

2) Kingdom is plantae.

3) Division is embrophyta.

4) Class is dicotyledonae.

5) Order is sapindales.

6) Family is anacardiaceae.

7) Genus is magnifera.

8) Specie is indica.

Explanation:

Eukaryote are those organisms having true nucleus. Dicotyledons are those plants in which seeds have two cotyledons. Mango plant belongs to Angiosperm i. e. seeds are hidden in the ovary.
