It was a very misogynistic time and the ideal woman would be one who’s submissive to her husband. But this was happening around the French Revolution and women were demanding to take part and to be heard in a way. They attempted riots and started attending political clubs.
Marquis wrote a newspaper article in support of political rights for women. (And people were pretty much shocked ) he wrote that frances women should get just as much political rights as men.
