During World War II, the Allied powers were the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union. These powers were against the Axis powers that consist of Germany, Italy, and Japan.
After successfully defeating the German forces in North Africa, the Allied powers turned their attention to Italy. This tactic was to make sure that the Axis powers were left defeated before they could regroup and attempt a joint attack on the Allied powers. And the surrender of Italy to the British and US forces led to Germany losing an important ally in the war.
