The area of the speed-time graph gives us the distance travelled . In this case we drop a perpendicular from v=4 to t=2 . Hence, we get a rectangle and a triangle. Now we calculate the areas of the rectangle and the triangle. Rectangle = 2×4=8 m and triangle =1/2×(4–2)×4=4 m. Now to get the distance travelled we add the two up. Hence, distance travelled= (8+4)m =12 m.
