The correct answer to this open question is the following.

The English colonies in North America were part of a larger Atlantic community in that English people were the ones that decided to leave Britain for different reasons in order to start a new life or in pursuit of better opportunities to make money. Different reasons for different kinds of people.

For instance, the case of the founders of the Jamestown, Virginia colony of 1607. But they were still part of a larger Atlantic community.

Or the case of the Puritans that arrived at the coast of North America in 1620 to found the Plymouth colony. What does Washington mean by the phrase “the spirit of party”?
dedylja [7]
What Washington called “the spirit of party” was, he argued, “inseparable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind”—namely, the tribal passion to separate the world into “we” vs. “they,” into rival and competing groups. This spirit can then easily become a desire to see “our side” win, regardless of whether our side is better than “their side” and regardless of the issues at stake or the facts of the matter.
