Reid ate 1/4 of the pumpkin pie. Vince ate 1/3 of the same pie. how much of the pie was left after Reid and Vince ate their pieces?

You would subtract 1-1/4-1/3
you could find all the multiples of both 3 and 4 and see which one matches 12/12-3/12-4/12
then you would subtract and it becomes 5/12
