It must have been hard, and to be brought up in a community in which you are put down and segregated because of something as insignificant as the color of your skin, where racism was justified by people in power. Growing up with the mindset that people don't appreciate you because of how you look must have been hard to understand, but something that was frequent and became the mindset of many.
