By the beginning of January the drill was down to 1,200 feet. On January 10, 1901, the drill was lowered into the hole, and with

in minutes, the well exploded. A messy shower of mud and four tons of drill pipe shot out of the hole. Then came a roar of gas and a sound like a cannon shot.
