Představují blízké příbuzné vyšších rostlin, které se z jedné linie zelených řas vyvinuly. Pokud vyšší rostliny do zelených řas neřadíme, pak jsou zelené řasy nepřirozenou, tzv. parafyletickou skupinou.[1][2] Proto se v novějších systémech do taxonu zařazují i vyšší rostliny[3] a nový smysl (= zelené rostliny) se odráží i v pozměněných názvech – Chlorobionta nebo Viridiplantae. Tento článek však pracuje s tradiční parafyletickou variantou. V tomto smyslu je známo 500 rodů a 16 000 druhů zelených řas.[4]
