In The Giver, they're taught that everything they do is 'right' even if to us it is morally wrong. Jonas's dad saw nothing wrong with it because it was what he had been taught and was the standard in that community. He truly thought that what he was doing was right and the best option. Jonas was the only one in his community that thought differently, and that's why he was chosen as the next Receiver of Memory.
