​James Yates fue un afroamericano que en 1936 decidió embarcar rumbo a España para luchar con el bando republicano contra el fascismo. El documental Héroes invisibles: afroamericanos en la guerra de España, proyectado en enero en el Centro de residencias artísticas de Matadero en Madrid, relata la historia de la Brigada Lincoln, compuestas por 2.800 norteamericanos, entre ellos, 85 afroamericanos. Estos hombres protagonizaron un capítulo inédito de la historia entre España y Estados Unidos.  

Como miles de ciudadanos del sur de Estados Unidos, James Yates, se dedicaba al cultivo del algodón en Misisipi. Debido a la pobreza y la falta de libertades decidió emigrar a Nueva York, donde fue consiguiendo trabajos precarios en fábricas y comercios. Llegó en un mal momento: se produjo el crack de 1929 por lo que tuvo que vivir los años de la Gran Depresión.
