Al-unit by 3-unit rectangle is shown below. What is the area of the shaded rectangle?

Answer: 1.5 square units

The area of the whole rectangle is 3 units. Area is found by multiplying length by width. Only half of the rectangle is shaded, so if you take the whole area of the rectangle, and divide it in half, you get the area of that half rectangle.

By doing this, you divide 3 in half, and get 1.5 square units.
