Rebecca Saxe and her colleagues conducted an experiment on morals and social habits. The most important conclusions are the following:

  • When people gather in large groups, there is a possibility that both good and bad things may happen. Although a group may have good intentions (on social, political, or other aspects), there is always a possibility that this group may harm those outside the group.
  • Saxe states that a person individually can express a certain morality and values but, when being in a group, those could be set aside. The individual could even end up doing things that contradict what he/she personally thinks. This can be explained because in this group, the individual experiences anonymity and feels no need to take responsibility for the group’s actions.
  • The hypothesis of the research argues that when an individual enters a group, they can be ignore their individual and moral beliefs, being prone to participate in activities that they might consider arguable if they were not part of it.

Which examples from Gilgamesh: A New English Version most effectively illustrate the point that Gilgamesh takes risks? Select 3
exis [7]

Answer:

They advanced to the monster’s den. Humbaba / charged out roaring at them and said, / “I know you, Gilgamesh. Don’t be a fool.”

Gilgamesh felt his courage return. / They charged at Humbaba like two wild bulls.

He could not move forward, could not retreat. / Gilgamesh saw it, he leaped upon him, / he held a knife to Humbaba’s throat.

Explanation:

Stephen Mitchell's "Gilgamesh: A New English Version" is his translated version of the epic character of Gilgamesh, an ancient king of the city of Uruk. The character of Gilgamesh is described as a heroic king who feared no monsters and also displays the moral theme of friendship, loyalty, and the importance of mortality.

Among the given lines of the excerpt, the second, third, and fourth options show that Gilgamesh takes risks, They talk of how he<em> "advanced to the monster Humbaba's den"</em>. And instead of retreating in fear, he and his friend Enkidu charged at the monster <em>"like two wild bulls"</em> and eventually <em>"held a knife to Humbaba's throat"</em>. Despite the odds and Enkidu's fear, he maintained his composure and ensured that he displays no fear. Then, he led the charge and eventually helped defeat the monster.

Thus, the <u>answers are the second, third, and fourth options.</u>

In which excerpt from Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad is Tubman using ethos?
katen-ka-za [31]

Answer:

Ethos is a literary element used to establish some form of credibility, morals or ethics. It is used when trying to make someone believe in your character or a piece of information as proper. In this excerpt from Harriet Tubman's: Conductor on the Underground Railroad, "As they walked along she told them stories of her own first flight, she kept painting vivid word pictures of what it would be like to be free". The first sentence indicates the use of ethos by Tubman: "As they walked along she told them stories of her own first flight". And this is because she tries to tell them about the efforts she made to run away for them to trust her abilities.
