All these situations are very strange and it foreshadows that there is something odd about the old lady and that Billy is in danger. However, we really understand how bad the situation is when she explains that the two guests on the guest book have actually "never left": "But my dear boy, he never left. He's still here. Mr. Temple is also here. They're on the fourth floor, both of them together".
