There are two main themes that dominate the story "The Man Who Was Almost a Man" by Richard Wright. These two themes interact and build on each other throughout the story.
The first theme is that of power. This is clear throughout the story in all the decisions Dave makes. In the story, Dave wants to own a gun. However, the gun is seen as a way to become powerful and masculine, something he has been denied. He cannot keep the money he earns, he has to obey his parents, he is not respected among his peers. This leads him to want to accomplish power in any way he can find. Moreover, he is denied this autonomy because of racial reasons.
On the other hand, the story also has a component of a coming-of-age story. Dave wants to achieve autonomy, and he wants to be able to act freely. He also wants to be more independent and more of an adult, which in turn signifies more power. This is why he gets the gun. And in this way, both themes are related and build on each other. However, Dave discovers that having more power does not equal being more of an adult.

Explanation:
There was no shame mentioned. I don't think anyone lacked self-confidence. and this has nothing to do with friendship.
Since I was born in Romat Gan, Israel, I suppose that I can say the first major place I visited was the United States. Must have been a quite a sight, the moment I exited that plane, considering that I soiled myself; but then again, I was only a year old at the time. Since then, I've added the Grand Canyon to the roster of locations that I've stepped foot on. Of course, I only walked alongside the canyon, as my milky white skin could not handle the three day long trek it would take to journey across the national park. Six Flags Great Adventure was certainly more my speed, though I held an intrepid fear of roller coasters till I was 14 years old and peer pressure got the best of me as it did when I was 18 years old when I truly enjoyed the New Jersey shore for the first time among good friends while the underclassmen were stuck at school after Prom weekend.
(Haha sorry I forgot the directions said to describe one place with four proper nouns. I accidentally wrote about four proper noun locations. Though I think it still qualifies. Hope this helped.)
