Answer: The social life was plantations ( slavery), mansions, indentured servants, few cities, and few schools, and the Church of England. The political and civic life in the Southern colonies were countries. The Economy In the Southern Colonies depended on cash crops like this picture of tobacco. Settlers in the Southern colonies came to America to seek economic prosperity they could not find in Old England. The English countryside provided a grand existence of stately manors and high living.Politics was controlled largely by the wealthy plantation owners. Each Southern colony had a governor appointed by the English sponsor of that colony (whether trading company or crown colony). There would also be an assembly (like Congress) to represent the people of the colony.Royal Government: The Royal Colonies were ruled directly by the English monarchy. Propriety Government: The King granted land to people in North America, who then formed Proprietary Colonies.
