Describe how to calculate the Rf value for a spot on a TLC plate.
earnstyle [38]

Answer:

In thin-layer chromatography, the retention factor (Rf) is used to compare and help identify compounds. The Rf value of a compound is equal to the distance traveled by the compound divided by the distance traveled by the solvent front (both measured from the origin).

Predict what would happen to the volume of red blood cells if they were placed in a 1400 mOSM solution of NaCl. Predict what wou
astra-53 [7]

Answer:

If red blood cells are placed in a hypertonic solution, they will shrink because the water moves out of the cell through osmosis. When red blood cells are places in hypotonic solution they swell and rupture because the water moved in the cell through osmosis.

Explanation:

If red blood cells are placed in 1400mOsm of NaCl, the cell volume will be lost because the wayer in the cell moves out due to higher concentration of salt outside, they will shrink.

Similarly if the red blood cells are places in urea and NaCl the cell will again shrink.

Pregnant women have a significantly higher risk of contracting foodborne illness caused by a specific pathogen. Which is it?
kvv77 [185]

According to the research, pregnant women have a significantly higher risk of contracting foodborne illness caused by listeria monocytogenes.

What is listeria?

It is an infection caused by a gram-positive bacterium called listeria monocytogenes that contaminates food.

Pregnant women have a significantly probability of contracting this foodborne illness and may spread the infection transplacentally to the unborn child, causing spontaneous abortions.

Therefore, we can conclude that pregnant women have a significantly higher risk of contracting foodborne illness caused by listeria monocytogenes.

4) Considering the autonomic (visceral) nervous system identify which neurons are cholinergic and
Oxana [17]

Cholinergic and Adrenergic neurons

Explanation:

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a dual innervations system which innervates internal organs of the body through the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). Depending upon the neurotransmitter and receptor used, the ANS fibers are classified as cholinergic or adrenergic neurons.

The preganglionic neurons of the sympathetic and the preganglionic and postganglionic neurons of the parasympathetic nervous system release the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACH) and hence are called cholinergic neurons.

The postganglionic neurons of the sympathetic nervous system releases catecholamine like norepinephrine(NE) and hence called as adrenergic neurons.

The cholinergic neurons store ACH in the synaptic terminals. They are myelinated to aid in faster neurotransmission. The ACH neurotransmitter released from preganglionic neurons activates the two receptors – nicotinic ACH and muscarinic receptors on the postganglionic neurons .

The postganglionic neurons releasing NE binds to the adrenergic receptors – Alpha 1 and 2, Beta 1, 2, and 3.
