Using the slope formula

m = \frac{y_{2}-y_{1}  }{x_{2}-x_{1}  }

m = \frac{-1-1}{1-5} = \frac{-2}{-4} = \frac{1}{2}

Repeat with another 2 points and equate to \frac{1}{2}

with (x₁, y₁ ) = (1, - 1) and (x₂, y₂ ) = (k, 4)

m = \frac{4+1}{k-1} , then

\frac{5}{k-1} = \frac{1}{2} ( cross- multiply )

k - 1 = 10 ( add 1 to both sides )

k = 11
