It was a major battle in the Pacific during Word War II.  The Americans wanted to capture the island to establish a base of operations to invade Japan.  Still it was a hard fought battle and many soldiers on both sides lost their lives.  Eventually the war came to an end when the Americans dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

With the Central Powers, Germany had a “blank check” alliance with Austria-Hungary, which meant that Germany promised to join in any war that Austria-Hungary wanted them to. This caused Germany to help Austria-Hungary against Serbia. Italy also joined in, but then switched sides due to the promise of land and tense relations with the Central Powers.
