The secretion of aldosterone is directly stimulated by angiotensin II.
Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid hormone. It is synthesized in the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex that affects water and salt regulation in the body.
The basic function of the hormone is to act on the late distal tubule and collecting duct of nephrons in the kidney, which promotes sodium and water reabsorption and potassium removal thus maintaining acid-base balance.
Conditions like low blood pressure or low serum sodium stimulates the renin‐angiotensin‐aldosterone system (RAAS) in which initially renin is produced from the renal juxtaglomerular cells after which angiotensinogen is cleaved into angiotensin I. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) from the lungs then converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II, which in turn triggers the production of aldosterone.
