The US Capitol Building is the prime example of Neoclassical art and architecture in America. Construction of the US Capitol started in 1793. In fact, it was through the decoration of the buildings in the new city of Washington, DC that relief sculpture was first introduced to the United States.

This may also work or be added: Relief sculptures can be found throughout the US Capitol Building. The Capitol Rotunda—a large circular room located under the large dome—features many relief sculptures. When in the room, it may appear that the detailed frieze in the Rotunda is carved, but it is not. Instead, the Rotunda frieze is painted (frescoed) to look like sculpture.
