The book, <em>The Scarlet Letter, </em>is set in the 17th century. We know this because historically, colonization of Massechusetts (where the  story is also taking place,) started around the 1600's. We also know the time because of the religion practiced in the book- Puritainism. Puritanism is shown when they condemn Hester for adultry. They do this using a cruel punishment of public shaming and stitching a scarlet and gold letter "A" onto her clothes. This custom of shaming others for going against the bible was common in that time period, seeing as almost everyone believed in the religion (within the colonies.)
