The correct answer is C. Sonnets were invented in Italy before Shakespeare’s time.


Although Shakespeare did write a lot of sonnets, he wasn't the one who actually invented them. The person credited with 'inventing' the first sonnet is Giacomo da Lentini, in 13th century, way before Shakespeare was even born (in 16th century). Shakespeare did invent his own personal form of a sonnet, but not the sonnet as a genre.
