Even though Ma Edwin initially rejected the idea of moving to California, the picture of Sunny California with a prosperous orange grove must have imprinted in her heart the idea that the living condition in California would be much better than the one they were presently experiencing. All these events in the story support the inference that the picture of sunny California inspired hope in the family that the living condition in California would be better.
