Cats were praised for killing venomous snakes and protecting the Pharaoh since at least the First Dynasty of Egypt. Several ancient Egyptian deities were depicted and sculptured with cat-like heads such as Mafdet, Bastet and Sekhmet, representing justice, fertility and power.
