At that time, Lincoln were in an intermediate position between North and South. Northern people want to slavery to stay in South, they only wanted the not expansion of slaves policies. And South wanted to eradicated slavery. So, there was two radical position toward this issue and Lincoln wanted to reconcile both sides, through peaceful solutions.
