The next question refers to Shedding Light on a Dark Day, by Robin Meriwether. The paragraphs have been numbered to help you ide

ntify them more easily. Shedding Light on a Dark Day, by Robin Meriwether On May 19, 1780, the skies over New England turned dark in the middle of the day. For more than two hundred years, New England's Dark Day had been shrouded in mystery. Some blamed volcanoes. Some suggested supernatural events. Some claimed it was a sign from the heavens. No one knew for certain what happened. Many thought the mystery would never be solved. Researchers at the University of Missouri were fascinated by the case. They began examining trees in all surrounding areas. Fire damage in a Canadian forest finally revealed the truth. Scientists looked at burned tree rings and discovered that huge wildfires once raged in the mountains near Ontario. The savage flames created blankets of black smoke. The smoke traveled high into the atmosphere, darkening the New England skies hundreds of miles away. How do paragraph one and paragraph two work together to present the author's ideas? Paragraph one explains the cause of investigation. Paragraph two shows the results. Paragraph one offers a solution. Paragraph two explains a problem the solution creates. Paragraph one presents facts. Paragraph two presents additional facts on the same topic. Paragraph one and paragraph two do not have a clear connection to each other.

It's not clear where the paragraph break is between one and two, but I might be able to help you. The last option is incorrect, because all of the text relates which is why it's hard to determine where the paragraph break might be. Paragraph one does not offer a solution as it isn't until the end we know the cause of the dark day. While both paragraphs have at least one fact, paragraph one seemingly is full of guesses as to the cause of the dark day. This leaves the only correct option as the first one. The researchers decided to investigate the cause of the dark day, and then the results are reported.

In 100 words or less, explain the difference between indirect and direct characterization and provide one example of each.
Drupady [299]
Direct characterization is when an author clearly states in the text what kind of personality the character has. For example, if the author writes " Cidney was always sad" That would be direct characterization. Indirect characterization would be " Cidney always seemed to be frowing or pouting" which would then lead you to believe she's always sad. Both of those examples pretty much mean the same thing exept one is direct and the other is making you infer.

PLEASE HELP!!! FIND THE VARIABLES THAT ARE IN THE PARAGRAPH.
solmaris [256]

Answer:

Independent variable: Type of fertilizer

Dependent variable: Growth rate of carrots

Control variable: No fertilizer

Explanation:

An independent variable in statistics is defined as the variable that is manipulated, and a dependent variable is defined as the variable that is measured. A control variable is defined as a variable that doesn't change and is used to compare the other variables to. Furthermore, the independent and control variables are graphed on the x-axis, and the dependent variables are graphed on the y-axis.

In this case, the farmers manipulate the type of fertilizer they use to measure the effect it has on growth. The control variable would then be the carrots that grow without any fertilizer, because if the fertilizer does have an effect on growth, you would want to know how much or what kind of effect it has.
