Scott and Letitia are brother and sister. After dinner, they have to do the dishes, with one washing and the other drying. They

are having trouble deciding who will do what task, so they came up with a method based on probability. Letitia grabs some spoons and puts the is a bag. Some have purple handles and others have green handles. Scott has to pick two of the spoons. If their handles are the same, Scott will wash. If they are different colors, he will dry. It turns out there are two purple spoons and three green ones. What is the probability of Scott washing the dishes?

Answer:

The probability that Scott will wash is 2.5

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

Let the events be: P = Purple and G = Green

P = 2

G = 3

Required

The probability of Scott washing the dishes

If Scott washes the dishes, then it means he picks two spoons of the same color handle.

So, we have to calculate the probability of picking the same handle. i.e.

P(Same) = P(G_1\ and\ G_2) + P(P_1\ and\ P_2)

This gives:

P(G_1\ and\ G_2) = P(G_1) * P(G_2)

P(G_1\ and\ G_2) = \frac{n(G)}{Total} * \frac{n(G)-1}{Total - 1}

P(G_1\ and\ G_2) = \frac{3}{5} * \frac{3-1}{5- 1}

P(G_1\ and\ G_2) = \frac{3}{5} * \frac{2}{4}

P(G_1\ and\ G_2) = \frac{3}{10}

P(P_1\ and\ P_2) = P(P_1) * P(P_2)

P(P_1\ and\ P_2) = \frac{n(P)}{Total} * \frac{n(P)-1}{Total - 1}

P(P_1\ and\ P_2) = \frac{2}{5} * \frac{2-1}{5- 1}

P(P_1\ and\ P_2) = \frac{2}{5} * \frac{1}{4}

P(P_1\ and\ P_2) = \frac{1}{10}

<em>Note that: 1 is subtracted because it is a probability without replacement</em>

So, we have:

P(Same) = P(G_1\ and\ G_2) + P(P_1\ and\ P_2)

P(Same) = \frac{3}{10} + \frac{1}{10}

P(Same) = \frac{3+1}{10}

P(Same) = \frac{4}{10}

P(Same) = \frac{2}{5}

A torus is formed by rotating a circle of radius r about a line in the plane of the circle that is a distance R (&gt; r) from th
jeyben [28]

Consider a circle with radius r centered at some point (R+r,0) on the x-axis. This circle has equation

(x-(R+r))^2+y^2=r^2

Revolve the region bounded by this circle across the y-axis to get a torus. Using the shell method, the volume of the resulting torus is

\displaystyle2\pi\int_R^{R+2r}2xy\,\mathrm dx

where 2y=\sqrt{r^2-(x-(R+r))^2}-(-\sqrt{r^2-(x-(R+r))^2})=2\sqrt{r^2-(x-(R+r))^2}.

So the volume is

\displaystyle4\pi\int_R^{R+2r}x\sqrt{r^2-(x-(R+r))^2}\,\mathrm dx

Substitute

x-(R+r)=r\sin t\implies\mathrm dx=r\cos t\,\mathrm dt

and the integral becomes

\displaystyle4\pi r^2\int_{-\pi/2}^{\pi/2}(R+r+r\sin t)\cos^2t\,\mathrm dt

Notice that \sin t\cos^2t is an odd function, so the integral over \left[-\frac\pi2,\frac\pi2\right] is 0. This leaves us with

\displaystyle4\pi r^2(R+r)\int_{-\pi/2}^{\pi/2}\cos^2t\,\mathrm dt

Write

\cos^2t=\dfrac{1+\cos(2t)}2

so the volume is

\displaystyle2\pi r^2(R+r)\int_{-\pi/2}^{\pi/2}(1+\cos(2t))\,\mathrm dt=\boxed{2\pi^2r^2(R+r)}

In which quadrant would (8, -18) be in?
docker41 [41]
It would be in the fourth quadrant because x is positive and y is negative. The quadrants are labeled in counter-clockwise order, starting in the upper-right.

Amelia measured the elementary school and made a scale drawing. The scale of the drawing was 11 mm, 4 m. If the schoolyard is 48
cestrela7 [59]

Answer:

176

Step-by-step explanation:

every 11 mm in the drawing equals 4m.

every 1 mm in the drawing equals 4/11 m

Actual size of school yard = 484*4/11 = 176m
