After you swallow, peristalsis pushes the food down your esophagus into your stomach. Stomach. Glands in your stomach lining make stomach acid and enzymes that break down food. Muscles of your stomach mix the food with these digestive juices.

The esophagus does not digest the food, but it does the important job of pushing the food down into the stomach as well as keeping it from coming back up into the mouth. Once in the stomach, further digestion takes place. The stomach produces acid that helps to kill bacteria and other germs that may get into food.

From the small intestine, undigested food (and some water) travels to the large intestine through a muscular ring or valve that prevents food from returning to the small intestine. By the time food reaches the large intestine, the work of absorbing nutrients is nearly finished.
