The area of a rectangle is expressed as x4 - 9y2. What are the possible dimensions of the rectangle?
AnnyKZ [126]

This is a stupid question. The teacher who asked this needs to go back to school.

A = x⁴ - 9y²

That's going to be a number. As long as it's positive we can choose any length for our rectangle L and we can compute the width by W=A/L. So the correct answer is the dimensions are L by (x⁴ - 9y²)/L.

They don't want the correct answer. They want you to factor this expression. We'll do it, but don't believe for a second this factoring somehow constrains the possible dimensions of some rectangle.

We use the difference of two squares, a²-b² = (a+b)(a-b)

A = x⁴ - 9y² = (x²)² - (3y)² = (x²+3y)(x²-3y)

Answer: x²+3y by x²-3y

Can somebody help me with this?
icang [17]

We are given polynomial: 5x^3+8x^2-7x-6.

We need to explain why the binomial (x + 2) IS a factor of this polynomial expression and why the binomial (x + 1) IS NOT a factor of this polynomial expression.

Let us set first factor equal to 0 and solve for x.

x+2=0

x=-2.

Plugging x=-2 in given polynomial, we get

5(-2)^3+8(-2)^2-7(-2)-6 = 5(-8) +8(4)+14-6

= -40 +32+14-6

=0

Because x=-2 gives 0 on plugging in given polynomial, so it's factor of given polynomial expression.

Now, let us check second factor x+1=0

x=-1.

Plugging x=-1 in given polynomial, we get

5(-1)^3+8(-1)^2-7(-1)-6 = 5(-1) +8(1)+7-6

=-5+8+7-6.

= -4.

Because x=-1 doesn't gives 0 on plugging in given polynomial, so it's not a factor of given polynomial expression.

Find the slope of the line on the graph. Write your answer as a fraction or a whole number, not a mixed number or decimal.
Zolol [24]

Answer:

apologies the answer's 3. I didn't realize it was talking about slope.

Step-by-step explanation:

Use Rise/Run and "b" is just the y intercept, which is the point where the line intersects the y-axis, in this case b=2. Hope this helped.

A figure is made up of two triangles and a square. The triangles and the square have the same base length of 5 feet. The triangl
Paraphin [41]

Answer:

45 ft^2.

Step-by-step explanation:

Area = area of the square + 2 * area of one triangle

= 5^2 + 2 * 1/2 * 5 * 4

= 25 + 20

= 45 fT^2.
