Allusion can be defined as a reference in a literary work to a well known person, text, thing, or event. Thus, allusions avails an author the opportunity to compress or embed a great deal of meaningful and significant informations into a phrase or word.

In conclusion, the connection that must be made to interpret an allusion is a connection between what the reader knows and what is referred to in the text.

Simply stated, an allusion can only make sense if the reader has a pre-knowledge of what the writer is inferring in the text.

Some examples of the use of allusion in English language includes;

II. Arrow of love.
