Poets are invited to presidential inaugurations because they have an unique ability to elicit emotions and inspire with words.

Poets are talented individuals who know how to use language in artistic ways much better than a president or any other politician, so it naturally makes sense that a president enjoys the the presence of a poet in his or her inauguration, it could even help the inaugurated president raise his popularity levels.
