This poem, published in Louisville Journal on March 20,1861, characterized God as a remote person who had no real relationship or concerns with the sufferings of the discriminated blacks. To make this point, the poet asked several questions like, "Has God, then, no world to look after but ours?" This question portrayed God as a busy person who was not interested in the affairs of men.
The poet also mentioned that 'God might have been busy searching for a wild star'. Thus, God is shown to lack concern for the sufferings of men.

The term "The Giver" refers to the old man, the former Receiver, who transfers all his memories to Jonas. The very names "Giver" and "Receiver" remind us of one of the book's central themes: memory is meant to be shared. ... But, more interestingly, Jonas becomes The Giver when he gives his memories to Gabriel.
