Natural rubber was first used by the indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin for a variety of purposes. By the middle of the eighteenth century, Europeans had begun to experiment with rubber as a waterproofing agent. In the early nineteenth century, rubber was used to make waterproof shoes.From the increase in demand of ivory and rubber, Leopold brutally and forcefully made his way through the Congo. Due to raiding villages and their resources, Leopold II is responsible for the deaths of millions of Congolese people during the 1890's and early 1900.
