Answer: After thinking about "hundreds and hundreds of boys living on the wrong sides of cities.", Ponyboy makes the decision to grab a pen and write about it. He did this after experiencing the passing of many kids due to poverty, and he realized the power that he had in his hands.

Explanation: Ponyboy is a character that experiences a big transformation throughout the story. He sees boys perishing all over the streets and realizes that someone needs to make noise and speak about it, so he decides to take a pen and write everything he witnessed; that way, people could perhaps understand a little bit more and raise awareness about the topic.
