Answer:

Nelson Mandela, one of the most recognizable human rights symbols of the twentieth century, is a man whose dedication to the liberties of his people inspires human rights advocates throughout the world.

Born in Transkei, South Africa, Mandela was the son of a tribal chief, and educated himself with a university degree and law degree. In 1944, he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and actively worked to abolish the apartheid policies of the ruling National Party. On trial for his actions, Mandela declared, “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

Sentenced to life imprisonment, Mandela became a powerful symbol of resistance for the rising anti-apartheid movement, repeatedly refusing to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom. Finally released in February 1990, he intensified the battle against oppression to attain the goals he and others had set out to accomplish almost four decades earlier.

In May 1994, Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president, a position he held until 1999. He presided over the transition from minority rule and apartheid, winning international respect for his advocacy of national and international reconciliation. An international celebration of his life and rededication to his goals of freedom and equality was held in 2008, on the occasion of his 90th birthday.

As a leader, South African President Nelson Mandela demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities, including advocacy for peace, powerful presence that disarmed enemies with his smile, high level of forgiveness, positive thinking, ability to see the big picture, focus on goals and missions beyond himself.

Jlenok [28]
The renaissance period changed several positions.

Artists went up in status.
Writers went up in status.
Thinkers went up in status.
Doctors went up in status.
Craftsmen went up in status.
Traders went up in status. (Made much money. Check out several Italian families.)

The clergy went down in status. Particular not seen as all knowing.

African Americans were not alone in their boycotts. Read this account of Sarah Herbert's efforts to help the boycott.
Alinara [238K]

The correct answer to this open question is the following.

Unfortunately, you did not include the excerpt or the account, so we do not what it says. However, trying to help you we can comment on the following based on our knowledge about the topic.

During the Montgomery Bus Boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, things got ugly. It was a major risk for African Americans to join the protests. Indeed it was expected that black people would join the protests, but nobody really expected white people to join the protests.

Well, one did, and not only protested but also helped the cause. Her name was Sarah Herbert. She lived in Montgomery and decided to drive her car to transport black people. So she treated African Americans fairly in a time when injustice, inequity, and racial segregation were the name of the game for blacks.

The Montgomery Boycott started in December 1955 and ended in December 1956. The protest started after black woman Rosa Parks was arrested for denying her seat to a white person when riding the bus.

In the above quotation, what does Paine mean by the terms "summer soldier" and "sunshine patriot"?
prisoha [69]
During the (first) American revolution, soldiers who joined the Continental Army during the spring or summer but went AWOL in the fall or winter were known as "summer soldiers".

Many of the "summer soldiers" were farmers who would join up with the Army when their crops were planted, fight with them during the summer, and go back home to help with the harvest. Others would stay with the Army through the harvest, but sneak off in the middle of the night once the weather got cold.

Meanwhile, the people who supported the revolutionaries when the revolution was going well -- but not otherwise -- were called "sunshine patriots".

So in the famous passage from "The Crisis" where Thomas Paine wrote:
The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country
he was talking -- quite literally in the former case -- about the fair-weather friends of the Revolution.
