The Germans launched a surprise against Allied forces in the Ardennes in December 1944, in an attempt to retake Antwerp and cut off the main source of supplies for the Allied forces. Initially successful it took the Allies by surprise and they suffered heavy losses. However the attack eventually petered out by January 1945 as superior Allied forces consolidated their positions and pushed the Germans back.

It can be described as a turning point in that it was the last dice cast by the Germans in the West in their attempts to avoid defeat.
