Yes, a lot of this has to do with political ideology, but people did not like some of the provisions of the Patriot Act like decreasing government involvement and security because they thought it was necessary for the government to be that way even though there was tons of controversy that the Patriot Act violated the right to privacy because of the major increase in government involvement.
Socialist parties grew during the period of labor unrest and high unemployment because their platform appealed to people that were experiencing inequality and widespread misery which they blamed on the government and corporations. The promise of socialism and its ideologies readily appealed to them as a result of their misery

One reason is because of a gender gap. For example, if a someone (a women) collapse on the ground and isn't breathing, studies do show that women are most likely to die and not receive CPR because of their gender.
