In Orwell's book "1984", Winston lives at “Victory Mansions,” drinks “Victory Gin,” and smokes “Victory Cigarettes.” When he can

Everything is called victory because the society that he lives in tries to create a utopia in the sense that one is does not desire anything more than one has. In 1984, the government is trying to create a sense of contentment, a sense that their society is optimal. This is basically just another way of trying to keep the people, like Winston, from wondering what else the world has to offer, and uncovering secrets. In Winston's case, it doesn't necessarily make him feel more positive about the future; rather, it makes him feel a little perturbed, for he doesn't feel "victorious". Regarding others in the community, the word "Victory" seems to have lost in meaning. There is no longer power to it. "Victory" is an everyday word, implying that after victory, there is only content. This connotation that "victory" has, seems to affect people in one of two ways. The first, is to make them almost depressed, thinking that there is, perhaps, nothing to look forward to. The second is that it makes people feel as the government intended, content. They truly believe that they are living in the post-victory society, where all problems have been addressed, and evils conquered.

Which of the following lines uses figurative language?
tia_tia [17]

The line that uses figurative language is the last one: The girl's eyes were deep blue oceans.

Figurative language refers to the use of figures of speech to make a literary text more impactful and to develop a more creative writing. Some forms of figurative language are simile, metaphor and personification. In the case of the line "The girl's eyes were deep blue oceans", there is a metaphor since a thing (the deep blue oceans) is regarded as representative of something else (the girl's eyes). In that way, the author is describing the girl's eyes by means of a comparison that, at the same time, should not been taken literally.

How do Arthur and Ford Prefect avoid death at the end of the novel?
vagabundo [1.1K]

For these questions, we must read the novel "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," focusing on Arthur and Ford Prefect, as well as the supercomputers.

 • Arthur and Ford Prefect avoid death when they are rescued by a spaceship called Heart of Gold.
 • The second supercomputer trying to answer the question about life, the universe, and everything is planet Earth.
 • When Earth was about to give its answer, it was destroyed by the Vogons.

What happens in the novel?

The famous science-fiction novel "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" has Arthur as its main character. The almost nonsensical story is filled with twists as we find out that our planet Earth is simply a supercomputer built to answer he question about life, the universe, and everything. It evolved so much that organic life became a part of it. Here on Earth, the most intelligent species are actually the mice, not us humans.

However, Earth is destroyed, and Arthur is one of the two people who survive. In his adventures in outer space, Arthur meets several alien species and undergoes comical hardships.

After reading the novel, we can provide the following answers to the questions:

 • Arthur and Ford Prefect avoid death when they are rescued by a spaceship called Heart of Gold.
 • The second supercomputer trying to answer the question about life, the universe, and everything is planet Earth.
 • When Earth was about to give its answer, it was destroyed by the Vogons.
