"Open mouth, insert foot" was a common adage for someone that had said something embarrassing or inappropriate, also known as "to put one's foot in one's mouth."

Example of this adage in a sentence:

"If I speak for too long, I tend to <u>put my foot in my mouth</u>, so I need to keep it short and simple before I embarrass myself."
