What is atmosphere in literature

English

Answer:

The emotional response a text generates from a reader

Explanation:

1. The attitude of a text toward the subject and theme – this is the <u>wrong </u>answer. The tone would be the attitude of a text toward what is written in it.

2. The emotional response a text generates from a reader – <u>This is the correct answer. The atmosphere of the text is the mood or the feeling the written piece wakes in us while we are reading it.</u> The atmosphere can be generated through the plot, descriptions, characters, etc. <u>For example, if we say the atmosphere of the piece is dark, that means the text is in some shape or form dealing with dark subjects and makes us feeling gloomy, grim, ominous, maybe even sad or uncomfortable.</u>

3. The author’s opinion of the subject and the audience – this is also the wrong question. Again, the tone would be the correct way to name the author’s opinions.

4. The narrator’s perspective in relation to the characters – this is the wrong question. We find out about the narrator’s perspective through the plot and dialogue more, but this is not what the atmosphere means.

mrs_skeptik [129]
In stanza 1 the tone of the text is more peaceful and calming using words such as stars, delight, twinkle whereas in stanza 3 it’s more urgent this is shown with the use of exclamation marks !! And how it mentions terror and screams etc stanza 1 is more peaceful and utopian whereas stanza 1 feels distressing and dystopian

Read the excerpt below from the poem “Ulalume” by Edgar Allan Poe and answer the question that follows.
Deffense [45]
Alliteration: "<span> as the scoriac Rivers that Roll— As the lavas that Restlessly Roll" (the 'r' sound is being repeated at the beginnings of words)
</span><span>
assonance: "</span><span>In the ultimate climes of the pOle— That grOan as they rOll dOwn MOunt Yaanek In the realms of the bOreal pOle" (the vowel sound "o" is repeated throughout the words)
</span><span>
consonance: "o</span><span>f CypreSS, with PSyche, my Soul" (the consonant "s" sound is repeated at the beginning and ends of words)

These sound devices have a sing-songy effect on the poem which helps create the mystical and mysterious mood. It almost lulls the reader into a type of trance through the memory of the narrator.
</span><span>
imagery: "</span><span>As the lavas that restlessly roll Their sulphurous currents down Yaanek"
</span>
This strong imagery helps to bring the memories to life for the reader  and helps the reader relate to the mindset and the emotions of the narrator by providing images to compare them to. Comparing his heart bursting to the way lava flows down the side of a mountain creates a strong image.
