The main character is Bee Branch. Bee Branch is a fifteen-year-old girl. She is the daughter of Bernadette Fox and Elgin Branch. Bee is an only child.When Bee was born, she had a heart problem. She underwent numerous surgeries as a baby. The final surgery was able to correct the problem and she never had additional heart problems after that. Bee attend a private school, Galer Street. She is a straight A student. In addition to her studies, Bee also plays the flute. It's Bee's idea to go to Antarctica on a family trip as a graduation present for Bee moving on from Galer Street to her boarding school, Choate.
